Part 1

1. Copyright and Lending Policy

Copyright laws will not allow the Association to give permission to sell the plays or to copy them in their entirety; however, copies may be made of small segments of the recorded productions in order to make visual aids for professional papers, for presentation, or for pedagogical purposes. The films are available to members of the Association on a loan basis for the cost of handling and mailing. Presently, fees have been set by the Board of Directors at $5.00 for mailing in the U.S., $7.50 in Canada and other countries and must be paid in full before the order can be mailed. Members have use of the videotape for one month. The films may be borrowed for a semester at a cost of $20.00. Members not returning films by the designated return date will be assessed additional monthly fees. For currency outside the United States, all funds must be drawn on US. banks. Members can pay by logging into the website and using the PayPal link or by mailing a check or money order, payable to AHCT, to the Association treasurer. If you should need to order films for delivery via a speedier means than normal, you will also be billed for the additional cost. If fees remain unpaid or tapes not returned, all borrowing privileges will be suspended until the matter is resolved.

3. Present Edition

The present edition is the tenth in a series of AHCT catalogs, the first of which appeared in 1985. This edition of the CATALOG contains a continually updated listing of our holdings and features plays dramatized at the Chamizal Siglo de Oro Festival as well as at various colleges and universities throughout the United States, among which are Virginia Commonwealth University, Georgetown University, Texas A&M, the University of Texas and the University of Missouri, as well as selected professionally prepared materials.

4. A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE AHCT

The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater, Inc. was chartered as a non-profit organization in 1984 to promote and foster greater appreciation for Spain's classical drama in production. An international organization, the Association counts among its members literary scholars, theatrical directors and producers, teachers, and other aficionados of Spain's Golden Age of Theater.

The Association maintains a rare collection of Spanish Renaissance and Baroque plays on film and videotape. The materials in the Association's visual library are available to its members and serve as resources for scholarly investigations, an invaluable repertoire for theatrical companies, exciting tools for the classroom, and delightful entertainment for the general public.     • Sponsors and encourages LIVE PRESENTATIONS of the Golden Age plays in English translation via the Walker M. Reid award.
    • Encourages members and others to create ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS of Golden Age drama by offering the Franklin G. Smith award to a translator who works with a stage company to prepare a production of the work.
    • Organizes SESSIONS ON COMEDIA PERFORMANCE at the MLA and other professional meetings.
    • Links AHCT members via a NEWSLETTER, an E-MAIL system, and an ELECTRONIC BULLETIN BOARD. For information on these, please contact Vern Williamsen at vwilliam@u.arizona.edu.
    • Maintains an ELECTRONIC LIBRARY containing searchable and downloadable texts of more than two hundred twenty comedias, autos sacramentales, and entremeses in Spanish, comedias in English translation, several useful biliographies, including a lengthy list of plays available in English translation, and various other teaching and study informational materials. THE KARA DUNN ARMSTRONG COLLECTION

In 1985, William D. Armstrong of Lubbock, Texas, inaugurated this collection in memory of his wife, Kara Dunn Armstrong, a teacher of Spanish who, during her lifetime had a deep and abiding interest in Spanish language, history, and culture. Mrs. Armstrong was a teacher of Spanish in the Lubbock Public Schools and at Texas Tech University. The number of films and videotapes in the collection has steadily grown since its inception.

THE HOLDINGS OF THE ARCHIVES COLLECTION

AHCT has accumulated a wealth of visual materials as a result of the annual Siglo de Oro Drama Festival which has taken place each March since 1976 at the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso, Texas. In addition to the many slides, photos, critiques, and other visuals are videotapes in 3/4 inch black and which of the complete festival seasons of 1979 and 1980. These videotapes appear in the AHCT catalogue thanks in part to a grant and funding from the Program for Cultural Cooperation Between Spain's Ministry of Culture and United States' Universities.

LA EDAD DE ORO DEL TEATRO ESPANOL (HD 88)

Produced by the Northwood Institute and the Institute for Advances Studies in Theater Arts (IASTA). Spanish. The original abbreviated version in Spanish of "The Spanish Golden Age of Theater," I (HD87) and II (HD872). Kara Dun Armstrong Collection. Color. 18 minutes.

FIESTA DE AMOR Y DE CELOS (HD 86)

A promotional film produced by Televisión Española for a proposed television mini-series. 1983. Co-authored by Fernando Fernán Gómez and Jesús García de Dueñas, the script is based on the Calderón-Hidalgo collaboration for CELOS AUN DEL AIRE MATAN. This tape includes a dramatization of the interaction between the famous Spanish dramatist and the composer. Also of historical interest are the actual setting of the corral in Almagro and the artists' conceptions of the Corral del Príncipe and the Coliseo del Buen Retiro. Background music for the film is from Calderón and Hidalgo's CELOS. Color. 20 min.

THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGE OF THEATER, PART I (HD 87)

Produced by the Northwood Institute and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Theater Arts (IASTA). 1987. English. This study forms a part of IASTA's series of films entitled "Theater: The Search for Style." Part I treats Spain's theatrical tradition at the time of Lope de Vega. It features extensive dramatized scenes from Lope's THE KNIGHT FROM OLMEDO and includes archive footage of Director José Tamayo's 1962 production of the play for IASTA. THE SPANISH GOLDEN AGE OF THEATER, PART II (HD 872)

Produced by the Northwood Institute and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Theater Arts (IASTA). 1987. English. This study forms a part of IASTA's series of films entitled "Theater: The Search for Style." Part II treats Spain's theatrical tradition at the time of Calderón de la Barca. IASTA's Jack Eddelman directs a group of actors in dramatizing vignettes from Calderóns' THE PHANTOM LADY, which was produced in 1986. UNDERSTANDING THE COMEDIA

The Visual Study Committee has designed a series of videotapes, UNDERSTANDING THE COMEDIA, an effort to correlate interpretive studies of the text with action production. This series of televised lectures attempts to study the Spanish classical drama by using slides, film and video clips of actual stage productions as illustrations. AHCT wishes to acknowledge the generous financial support from the Program for Cultural Cooperation Between Spain's Ministry of Culture and United States' Universities in carrying out this project.

The Pioneers

The videotapes in this collection consist of conversations with those figures in the field who had a substantial role in the founding and development of modern investigation of Spanish Golden Age theater, particularly those who have been associated over a period of time with North American Universities. The interviews are conducted by former students or "mentees" of the Pioneers or by fellow scholars. The purpose of this series is to remember and honor the work of the Pioneers.

CHARACTERIZATION IN THE STAGING OF THE COMEDIA: ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE CHAMIZAL (VSS 86). An experimental project which attempts to study the comedia by using slides and video-tape clips of actual stage productions as illustrations. Produced by Donald T. Dietz with technical assistance by Greg Geis of the Texas Tech Foreign Language Learning Resource Center, this video tape analyzes the director's influence on staging and characterization. Examples of characterizations are taken from live productions at the Chamizal; The "Comendador" from the 1984 production of Lope's Fuenteovejuna; the "Duque Federico" from the 1985 production of Calderón's El galán fantasma; and "El Autor" from the 1979 and1980 productions of El gran teatro del mundo. A promotional documetary on the the Siglo de Oro Drama Festival at the Chamizal National Memorial in El Paso,Texas. This exciting historical story of the founding of the Festival, its subsequent influence on AHCT and theSpanish Golden Age Theater Symposium, as well as its continued success through its outreach programs to schools in the El Paso area is dynamically told through interviews of Park Service officials, AHCT members, Chamizal audience, El Paso students, theater directors and actors.
