Romeos & Julietas: All Alike in Dignity

Friday, April 9, 3:00-5:00 pm PST

Diversifying the Classics invites you to learn about the star-crossed lovers of Lope de Vega and Shakespeare. Join us for a conversation with noted actor and translator Dakin Matthews and scholars Carla della Gatta (FSU) and Barbara Fuchs (UCLA), and a reading of scenes from Lope’s Castelvines y Monteses.

On March 18, New York's Public Theater will release a podcast of Romeo y Julieta <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublictheater.org%2Fproductions%2Fseason%2F2021%2Fromeo-y-julieta%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C83b3d32101744265732108d8e279fd47%7C085f983a0b694270b71d10695076bafe%7C1%7C0%7C637508360894086238%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=gmN0sJKKelHkV514mFfWs2J3luN9S52IoS10dEisNcI%3D&reserved=0>, a bilingual version of Shakespeare's play, adapted by Saheem Ali & Ricardo Pérez González, and based on the Spanish translation by Alfredo Michel Modenessi. A recent interview with director Saheem Ali is here <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wnyc.org%2Fstory%2Fdirector-saheem-ali-talks-race-and-shakespeare-radio%2F&data=04%7C01%7C%7C83b3d32101744265732108d8e279fd47%7C085f983a0b694270b71d10695076bafe%7C1%7C0%7C637508360894096196%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=lT0bCwZYlFTEQ1uGM82keRdQFHkiTvnevAx9YEaBKLA%3D&reserved=0>.

Our presenters will discuss this production in relation to a much earlier Spanish version of the Romeo and Juliet story, Lope de Vega's Castelvines y Monteses <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cervantesvirtual.com%2Fobra-visor%2Fcastelvines-y-monteses--0%2Fhtml%2Fffe44bc4-82b1-11df-acc7-002185ce6064_3.html&data=04%7C01%7C%7C83b3d32101744265732108d8e279fd47%7C085f983a0b694270b71d10695076bafe%7C1%7C0%7C637508360894096196%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=RdlP9ExP%2B2P%2BpbPpiIk2v6xTY7n00sLsqYM%2BTSRhgAI%3D&reserved=0>, now translated into English by Dakin Matthews as Capulets and Montagues.

We will also offer a staged reading of selected scenes from Capulets. The text for the scenes will be distributed to all registrants. A complete text of Matthews' translation is forthcoming in April 2021 from Juan de la Cuesta <https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flinguatextbooks.com%2Fcollections%2Fjuan-de-la-cuesta-hispanic-monographs%2Fseries-ucla&data=04%7C01%7C%7C83b3d32101744265732108d8e279fd47%7C085f983a0b694270b71d10695076bafe%7C1%7C0%7C637508360894106157%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=OcTdTKBwZPhfK3lYVLlt%2BX7oaX3hDP2SbeVSeCphcWE%3D&reserved=0>.
