*CALL FOR PAPERS*

*67th Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America *

*7-10 April 2021*

*The Convention Centre Dublin*

*The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT) invites proposals
for the following panels: *

*1. The Ephemerality and Fragility of and in Early Modern Iberian Theater*

Theater, and especially, performance is characterized by its ephemeral
nature. Each performance is unique and cannot be reiterated. This panel
engages with the issue of theater’s ephemerality and fragility from a broad
range of questions and perspectives with relationship to early modern
Iberian theater: Is theatrical performance ephemeral or durable? What
tensions exist between the more “permanent” written texts (manuscripts,
*sueltas*, *partes,* other published source texts, editions, translations)
and ephemeral performance texts of early modern Iberian Theater? What
conditions have made the impact of the *Comedia* and other early modern
Iberian theatrical forms less long-lasting? What conditions made theatrical
performance difficult or unstable in early modern Spain? What conditions
make the performance of Hispanic classical theater difficult today? Do the
*comedias* and other plays themselves take up the themes of ephemerality or
durability, fragility or continuity? We invite proposals for papers that
dialogue with these questions from a multitude of perspectives that might
include the fields of:

• translation

• adaptation

• performance

• editing

• or other related fields

*Submission of proposals: *Please send a paper title and an abstract of
less than 150 words and a brief (no longer than five pages) curriculum
vitae (CV). Please include any A/V requests with your proposal and send it
to the AHCT Subcommittee on RSA Conference Panels, care of Bruce Burningham
(burningham at ilstu.edu). *Proposals must be received by July 15, 2020.*

We invite proposals for full panels on any *Comedia*-related topic to be
defined by the panel proposers themselves.

panel chair and respondent (optional). For each paper presenter, include a
paper title and an abstract of less than 150 words and a brief (no longer
than five pages) curriculum vitae (CV). Please include any A/V requests
with your proposal and send it to the AHCT Subcommittee on RSA Conference
Panels, care of Bruce Burningham (burningham at ilstu.edu). *Full proposals
must be received by July 15, 2020.*

*Please note:*

- No matter what transpires over the next several months regarding the
COVID-19 pandemic, the RSA will hold its Annual Meeting in 2021 – either in
Dublin or virtually. If circumstances render it unsafe or impossible for a
large group to meet in Dublin next spring, the RSA’s board of directors
will cancel the meeting no later than 1 February 2021 and convert it into a
virtual conference.

- Presentations may be made in English (the primary language of the RSA)
or in Spanish and should bear in mind the interdisciplinary makeup of the
RSA, as well as the need to be intelligible to scholars whose primary
interests and expertise may lie outside the Spanish-speaking world. The
title and abstract must be written in the language in which the
presentation will be given. Individual talks should be 15–20 minutes in
duration, and sessions should not exceed 90 minutes.

- The RSA permits participants to give only one paper at its annual
meeting.

- All presenters must be or become members of the RSA and must register
for the meeting (the conference registration deadline is 31 December 2020).

- To present in a session sponsored by the Association for Hispanic
Classical Theater, you must also be or become an up-to-date member of the
AHCT.

Submission of a proposal implies that you will subsequently participate in
the meeting if your proposal is selected. The RSA is considering sanctions
against those who withdraw after being selected or who fail to attend the
meeting. For more information on the annual meeting, see the RSA website:
www.rsa.org.
