de comedias* (innyard theatres) built in the Iberian Peninsula during the

Dear AHCT colleagues,



Rodrigo Arribas (of the Fundaci?n Siglo de Oro) recently contacted me regarding the following proposal (see below).? Basically, they have received some funding from the Spanish government and want to try to arrange a tour of the US involving universities with which we are affiliated.? In speaking with Rodrigo via Skype regarding this proposal, it is clear that he wants to try to be in Los Angeles for Barbara Fuchs's LA Escena festival in October of 2020, but he would then like to tour a few other locations while he is still in the US.? Ideally, a handful of universities in specific regions could cooperate to provide the "peque?os apoyos" that he anticipates that he will need.



Also, he would like to at least have an idea of potentially interested universities by early December.



If any of you might be interested in trying to involve your universities in this proposal, please let me know (although it would probably help for you to touch base with regional colleagues and then respond as a group).

En todo caso te pongo en antecedentes:

Hemos recibido noticas de que seremos apoyados con algunos fondos para promoci?n exterior el a?o que viene, 2020 ,? y querr?amos tratar de sacar adelante con vuestra colaboraci?n, intentar? tambi?n hablar con Barbara, a la que pongo en copia,? en este sentido con la idea de empezar en su festival en octubre, una gira por algunas de las Universidades que cuenten en sus claustros con miembros de vuestra Asociaci?n.

La idea ser?a la de viajar con el espect?culo "El Lazarillo" de Albacity que ha sido un ?xito en Almagro y tambi?n en nuestro Festival, y con "Valor, Agravio y Mujer" de Ana Caro, producci?n nuestra.

La mayor parte del gasto, como ocurri? en la gira que se organizan con "Entre Marta y Lope", correr?a por nuestra cuenta y por cuenta de la instituci?n p?blica espa?ola, requiriendo peque?os apoyos de car?cter log?stico por parte de los "anfitriones".

Sobretitular?amos al ingl?s.

Ser?a estupendo, adem?s de los encuentros con el publico, poder fomentar "talleres" sobre la interpretaci?n y el verso del Siglo de Oro impartidos por los actores y actrices de ambos espect?culos.

This theme-based resident fellowship program, established with the support of The Ahmanson Foundation of Los Angeles and the J. Paul Getty Trust, is designed to encourage the participation of junior scholars in the Center's yearlong core programs.

The core program for year 2020?21:

Resituating the Comedia
?
?a core program organized by Barbara Fuchs (University of California, Los Angeles)
Studies of the 17th-century Hispanic comedia have been reinvigorated by a strong turn to both early modern and contemporary performance. Scholars have also explored the transnational reception of the corpus, its translation, and its adaptation. This focus on performance and transnational reception has changed our understanding of the corpus, as of individual plays within it, by foregrounding questions of ideology and canonicity, situatedness and transformation.
?
Building on the efforts of UCLA?s Working Group on the Comedia in Translation and Performance and its Diversifying the Classics initiative, as well as the Clark?s strong holdings in both French and English reworkings of the comedia, this year-long program explores new contexts for Hispanic classical theater. In addition to presenting new research, the program will provide an opportunity for practitioners to encounter new plays, for working translators to share methodologies and interact with practitioners, and for all involved to become acquainted with the Clark?s collections in the history of European drama and performance.

Three conferences will highlight and examine new comedia studies, with its emphasis on performance and transnational reception. Roundtables and workshops with local scholars and practitioners, as well as sessions to present Clark materials, will complement the papers.

Conference 1: Making Classics: Canonicity and Performance
November 13?14, 2020

How has the field?s attention to performance transformed our understanding of the comedia? How does performance transform the canon, whether by highlighting new works or by reenvisioning them? This conference will take place in conjunction with the Nov. 13?15, 2020 LA ESCENA Festival of Hispanic Classical Theater at A Noise Within, in Pasadena.

Conference 2: Made for the Stage: Translation and Performance
February 5?6, 2021
?
How has a new generation of comedia translators taken up the challenges of performance? What are the best practices in translating for performance, and the available channels for dramaturgical collaboration? How do translators? choices impact the literary and performance canon? This conference will include a workshop on translating for performance.

Conference 3: The Comedia beyond Spain: Circulation and Adaptation
May 7?8, 2021
?
How does the circulation of the comedia transform it in transnational and imperial contexts, in the New World and the Old? How is canonicity impacted from abroad? How does the transnational impact of the comedia complicate both domestic periodization and national literary histories? Finally, how does adaption engage new contexts, whether geographic, historical, or ideological?
?
Scholars will need to have received their doctorates in the last six years, (no earlier than 1 July 2015 and no later than 30 September 2021). Scholars whose research pertains to the announced theme are eligible to apply. Fellows are expected to make a substantive contribution to the Center?s workshops and seminars. Awards are for three consecutive quarters in residence at the Clark.

Stipend: $50,760 for the three-quarter period including paid medical benefits for scholar and dependents.
Application deadline: 1 February 2020

Colegas,

I agree with Ian?s ask, as ?peque?os apoyos de car?cter log?stico por parte de los ?anfitriones?? is vague and subjective. I am happy to brainstorm with anybody looking to make this happen. In the meantime, am I right to read Rodrigo?s vague reference to mean that we would basically need to cover the costs of housing and feeding them on our campuses, plus perhaps any fees to use a performance venue on campus? That would explain his vagueness?they?re costs that we would be able to estimate better than he. It would also make sense to focus on the California/Southwest region, to build an itinerary around LA Escena that could avoid airfare.

Call for Papers:

AHCT Symposium in Almagro, Spain, July 7-9, 2020

Submission deadline: December 1, 2019



The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater invites submissions for a
symposium taking place in tandem with The Almagro International Classical
Theatre Festival in July 2020. Check the

details on the symposium, conference fees, registration, lodging and
programming.



This conference will promote dialogue between scholars and theater
practitioners in order to bridge the

traditionally-perceived divide between disciplines. Participants will:

   - study new ways of adapting the *comedia*
   - promote and expand collaborations between scholars and theater
   practitioners
   - discuss how to disseminate the study of the *comedia* through
   innovative approaches
   - build bridges among disciplines and collaborate on interdisciplinary
   projects



Panels will be organized as workshops and working groups. Sessions will not
overlap, giving participants

the opportunity to attend all presentations. Presentations should be
delivered in Spanish or English. *See the call for papers on the conference
page for details on workshop and working group themes.*



*Submission of proposals:*

? Workshop proposals should submit a single, 500-word description and
include short bios for each

of the participants. Workshops should consist of faculty and/or theater
practitioners. Graduate

students are welcome to submit as a part of a working group (see below).

? Abstracts should not exceed 300 words for Working Group participants,
including name and

institutional affiliation. For Working Groups, graduate students must
submit entire paper along

with their abstract.

? The deadline for receipt of all submissions (abstracts and graduate

Please note that space is limited and all submissions will be
peer-reviewed. The committee will notify participants of their
decision by *January
30, 2020*. The conference committee will facilitate purchasing of tickets
for the performances at a special discounted price. Conference presenters
must be members of The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater.
