Exactamente, David. Todo lo que es negativo sobre el color negro es subvertido en este monologo, mientras los soldados lo acechan, le rodean y están listos para golpear a Juan por defender su color... "veáse más adelante, he visto gallinas blancas, huir de este negro".

Could the line about "la pez" and "los vituperios del mar" have anything to do with the "unmixability" of water and pitch or the fact that pitch, when applied to the keel of a ship, repels water?  This fact would perhaps give the ship greater speed ("fugitivos pies")?
