[Comedias] Dietz Homage Volume TC

Dear AHCT Colleagues and Friends,



Please join me in adding your names to the tabula congratulatoria for the volume of essays being edited by Susan Paun de García and Don Larson in honor of AHCT founding member Don Dietz.  As a past secretary and also president of AHCT, I've seen first hand the long-term, personal investment Don has made in the association.  In 1984 he, along with three other Golden Age scholars (Matt Stroud, Vern Williamsen, and David Gitlitz) drew up bylaws, applied for incorporation in the state of Texas, and brought into being a scholarly organization to support and promote the performance of Golden Age Spanish drama.  Since that time, more than any other person, Don has given AHCT the leadership, the guidance, and the personal commitment to help it prosper.  In my view, AHCT is the best forum in the US today for comedia scholars to share their ideas and their research in a collegial and supportive atmosphere.   Don's vision and his example have also made it a place where members new to the profession, including graduate students, can feel welcome and encouraged.  AHCT's long association with and support for the Chamizal Memorial and their Siglo de Oro Festival provides yet another facet to AHCT's unique character, and Don deserves the greatest credit for building, nurturing, and maintaining this relationship.   My perspective is, of course, personal, since to me Don is both a senior colleague and a good friend.  But I can say also that my personal, professional experience as a scholar and a teacher has been greatly enriched by my membership in AHCT.  I can't help but believe this must be true for many other AHCT members.



Finally, given the atmosphere in our country today, to teach and carry out research in the humanities comprises in itself an important declaration of essential values.  To the extent that Don Dietz's contribution has helped sustain and inspire us, it is fitting, now more than ever, to join together to express our gratitude and admiration.
