Staging History, at the Spanish Court and in the Corral

Papers are sought for a 2016 Renaissance Society of America (Boston, 31 March–2 April) special session proposal exploring the stagings of national, colonial, and continental histories in the Spanish comedia. We welcome approaches addressing, though not limited to, any of the following topics: How did 16th and 17th-century playwrights depict historical events and figures (monarchs, courtiers, subjects; soldiers and subalterns; heroes and heretics; saints and sinners; etc.)? How did playwrights read and dramatize their sources? What use(s) did they seek to make of history as theater? How might theories of cognition, affect, precarity, or trauma enrich our understanding of early modern Spanish historical drama?

Please send 150-word abstracts with five key words and a 300-word cv to Barbara Simerka (simerkabarbara[at]gmail.com) and Christopher Weimer (christopher.weimer[at]okstate.edu). Proposals must be received by Thursday, 28 May 2015.
