Subject: [GEMELA] CFP: Female Friendship and Women's Networks in the Early Modern World

Dear GEMELA members,.

Please contact me if you interested in this panel for Sixteenth-Century Studies.

CALL FOR PAPERS

SIXTEENTH-CENTURY STUDIES CONFERENCE

OCTOBER 16-19, 2014 NEW ORLEANS

FEMALE FRIENDSHIP AND WOMEN'S NETWORKS IN THE EARLY MODERN WORLD

Classical philosophers and Renaissance humanists such as Michel de Montaigne often discuss the nature of friendship between men, while maintaining that women's souls are too frail for such sacred bonds. Early modern female writers like María de Zayas, Katherine Phillips, or Madeleine de Scudéry, however, reveal that strong bonds between women do exist and directly challenge male theorists with their own narratives of friendship. Furthermore, female alliances, whether in the court or the convent, may have allowed women to form communities for mutual protection and support within the confines of early modern patriarchies. This panel will thus explore sixteenth-century representations of female friendship and how women may have benefited-or perhaps even suffered-from same-sex relationships. Papers may consider themes such as convent life, women's courtly relationships, female literary networks, troubled female friendships, patronage and clientage, and passionate or homoerotic relationships. If you are interested in this panel, please submit a 250-word abstract and CV by March 28, 2014 to Jennifer Barlow at jeb2bt at virginia.edu.

Sincerely,
Jennifer
