Department Chair, Modern Languages

The University of South Dakota invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair of Modern Languages and Associate or Full Professor. Tenure will be considered based on credentials and experience.

The Department seeks an effective, practical leader with a clear vision for modern languages and an ability to communicate that vision persuasively to multiple constituencies.

The chair will be responsible for providing leadership for the department, representing the department's interests in the College of Arts and Sciences, recruiting faculty and students, developing a schedule of course offerings, conducting program assessment, managing the fiscal resources of the department, evaluating and mentoring faculty, and driving program development. Possible directions for development include extending the use of technology in language learning; renewal of the programs in French and German; expanding non-language course offerings in areas such as linguistics, literature in translation, and cultural studies; and increasing departmental involvement in USD's international programming, including study abroad, student exchange, and faculty-led programs.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Spanish (or the equivalent) and native or near-native fluency in Spanish, with preference given to candidates capable of teaching in more than one language. A scholarly record consistent with appointment as an associate professor is required. To be appointed at the rank of full professor, candidates must have established a national reputation of outstanding scholarship. Administrative experience is preferred. All department faculty are expected to have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.

The Department of Modern Languages offers the BA degree and minors in French, German, and Spanish, with additional instruction in Lakota and linguistics. The Department also contributes to a major and minor in international studies hosted by the Department of Political Science. A strong global learning program in the university's Center for Academic Engagement supports faculty who seek to provide students with international experiences. A goal of USD's strategic plan is to graduate globally aware students.
