Teaching the Gender Question through Hispanic Literature and Culture:
Theory and Practice

After nearly half a century, Rosario Castellanos’s Mujer que sabe latín (1973) continues to inspire us to reflect on women intellectuals and their role in University classrooms, particularly in an era when academic feminism, both critical as well as pedagogical, is examining new generations’ responses to feminism within and beyond the frame of nostalgia and in relation to current debates. Does a Hispanic Feminism exist in University classes? How do we talk with our students about “the question of gender” in Spanish departments? Based on what curricular choices and pedagogical methodologies? What direction has the debate taken? How do current practices differ from gender studies courses from previous decades and in non‐Hispanic contexts? Although based on empiric approaches around these questions, the fundamental aim is to rethink and open new lines of debate in the theoretical field of gender studies at large, especially in relation to a philosophy of teaching.
This collection of essay seeks to awaken critical reflection about:
Our experience teaching gender in relation to Hispanic texts in undergraduate and graduate courses.
New gendered readings of the Hispanic canon Gendered readings of non‐canonical texts.
Constructive dialog with Feminism in Translation and in the International Context Understanding the voices of gender from a historical perspective Gender theories applied to the analysis of texts written by women Those interested in contributing to this anthology are invited to send a title, 500 word summary, academic affiliation and brief bio to the editors by December 15, 2011. Acceptance will be provisional pending final approval of the completed essay. The deadline for submission of the completed essay is September 15, 2012.
